Cosy Books to Read in Autumn

In the post today, I want to share a seasonal wrap up of books that I have enjoyed over recent years. These books were selected because I think they pair nicely with the season of autumn.
I adore books and reading. I could spend hours browsing a large bookshop. In my days living in Vancouver, Canada, there was a two-story bookstore with a coffee shop inside. Many of my autumn days were spent browsing books in this shop.
Now where I live in Australia, my closest bookstore is inside a Westfield which is a large shopping mall and while I like the shop, it doesn’t have the same magic.
Further, it is right next to a kids play area so I’m asked to go play most of the time. In this season of my life, I read a lot more online reviews and do online book purchasing.
Not always, we attend a quarterly book fair to buy seconds. We also donate books that we no longer need.
I have two children that aren’t yet in school. Days with my kids means my reading volume looks different to usual. But I do what I can after they fall asleep and on weekends when we are relaxing.
My family enjoys low-light, minimal tech evenings. Low tech evenings give me an opportunity to enjoy books among days of motherhood with young children. I also prioritise reading to my kids daily so they are used to books and stories!
Cosy Books for Autumn / Fall by Genre
Since autumn is about slowing down and putting on a pair of cosy reading socks, what better than to pair your book to the season!
My two major fiction genres are fantasy and historical fiction. I dabble with romance among it all. I’ve categorised books by genre so you can find your match below.
Historical Fiction
The Lost Queen by Signe Pike
A cosy read for Autumn set in ancient Scotland! The Lost Queen is a unique blend of historical fiction, myth and folklore. It is set in the sixth-century. This novel focuses on a forgotten queen in history and the sister of the man who inspired the lore stores of Merlin. This is the first book in a trilogy. There is so much detail in this story, I gave it 5 stars. The research and story woven throughout is brilliant.

Romance
The Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon
Drums of Autumn is the fourth book in the Outlander series! So if you haven’t read Outlander you may wish to start there. But if you have watched Outlander and not read the books, you could always jump straight into Drums of Autumn. Given the book has autumn in the name, it’s very suited to the season. The romance in this book is famous. Claire and Jamie are likely one of the most adored book couples of our days.

Romantasy
Wild Reverence by Rebecca Ross
Wild Reverence was a book I talked about in my slow living in summer reflections. The setting and world created by Ross is completely unique to anything I have read. It was charming, otherworldly but very beautiful. I would love to see it illustrated! There is fantasy, a likeable female lead and a nice amount of romance. This is a standalone novel, so if you aren’t wanting to commit to a series, Wild Rerence is a pick for you.

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett
This is such an enchanting read! Truly, it’s a very lush setting. You could also consider this a warming book to read in the winter time due to the snow. But absolutely get cosy this autumn and settle into reading this book with a hot chocolate or tea. Take yourself into a wonderful journey with a bit of mystery. I recall selecting this book for the cover, but the story was great.

Fantasy
Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb.
This is the first book of a trilogy. Assassin’s Apprentice is a unique setting and time. To me it was reminiscent of medieval times. The main character a male who we journey with from boyhood to adolescence who becomes trained as an assassin for the king. This is a very well-regarded fantasy book. So if you’re exploring this genre, but have not yet read this book, it’s a cosy read for autumn.

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner
If you’re into mystery, a historical setting and a little fantasy, The Lost Apothecary is a great autumn read for you! A book that goes back and forth between two time periods. I like the style. I enjoy the 18th century London setting. This books is bery easy to read and not a huge amount of fantasy world setting. If you want something to breeze through try this. I’ve heard they are making a tv show of this book, so get in and read it before the show is released.

Autumn Reading Accessories
Lighting
Getting your lighting right while reading is essential. The utmost reading crime is an overhead LED light. Candlelight or a lamp only!
If you are reading shortly after sunset, try an amber light lamp. An amber lamp is where the blue light is removed, but you will still have green.
If you are reading right before red, I recommend a red light lamp as both blue and green light are no longer present, lending to better sleep prep!
In Closing
I hope you find a cosy ready for autumn! Let me know in the comments if you have read any of these or plan to. Stick around and see my autumn bread recipe to bake as a delicious snack while you read!
