Early Winter Slow Living Diary

Put on the kettle and read my slow living diary. Winter has arrived here in Australia!
As you can see from my photos above, I am enjoying cosy homemaking as per usual with regular loaves of sourdough in the oven. Spot my new measuring floral measuring cup set. They are so pretty!
Winter Books
Winter is certainly harmonious with slowing down. I’m drawn to reading this season, if I wake before my children it’s my favourite thing to do in the morning. While the sun has still not risen, I will use my red light lamp for lighting.
I’m currently reading The Boleyn Secret: A Novel by Alison Weir. If you are a historical fiction fan, this book is for you! The main character is the niece of Anne Boleyn, and therefore the cousin of Queen Elizabeth I.
Seasonal Harvest
What is fun at the start of winter where I live is a harvest festival where local orchards and farms open properties to the public for harvesting produce. This year we collected pecans, picked oranges and lemons.
There is something most delicious about eating an orange freshly picked from the tree. They taste divine!
Winter Baking
With the freshly picked lemons, I have my first go at baking a lemon tart. I’ve learned the key for the baking process is allowing the lemon filling time to properly thicken on the stove. The tarot also needs time to properly chill once it comes out of the oven for the lemon filling to properly set. Delicious!
Homemade tart and pie bases are always so tasty, and we love that when you make them at home you use butter. Certainly better than most store bought crusts where they are made with margarine or a highly processed oil. My daughter used the leftover tart crust to make the Christmas cookies below! She has been asking to make Christmas cookies even though it is June. Too sweet.
I’m almost baking my cottagecore-inspired homemade granola recipe each week. My current favourite way to eat it is with vanilla yoghurt after dinner. So tasty and feels like such a treat. In summer, I will mix this recipe with seasonal summer fresh fruit slices.
Winter in My Garden
Our back garden is a patio garden where most of the area is paved with bricks so I garden mostly in containers and large pots. In the early days of winter here my celery, silverbeet and baby spinach have been doing well.
I was pleasantly surprised to see some new flower buds open on my dwarf snapdragons from last season.
What is doing well in your garden?
In Closing
If you are in Australia, wishing you cosy and warm days ahead! You might like to stick around and read my post on staying connected to nature’s cycles, which is even tougher during the cooler months!
