Aligning With the New Moon Phase for Renewal
“Men are like the sun, they rise every morning, they conquer the day, they go down at night. But women are like the moon, sometimes they’re full, sometimes they’re half, sometimes they’re a slither.”
A beautiful quote from Barbara O’Neill.
Ebb and Flow Like the Moon
We can’t always bloom. We will burnout and exhaust ourselves trying, or even resent parts of our lives that we would otherwise appreciate. If we look to nature, everything grows and blooms in a cycle. Yet in our always connected digital world, we can find ourselves constantly striving.
Our souls are better nourished if we ebb and flow. To gently expand and then contract again. I look to the moon’s journey for encouragement to ebb and flow. We can step outside at night and witness the moon regularly soften and retreat, then expand and reach peak light; just like we should.
Looking at the moon’s journey of growing, blooming, shrinking and disappearing every month is a lovely way to align your feminine soul with a gentle rhythm. Observing the moon helps us with a slow living lifestyle.
In this post I’m talking about one part of the moon’s journey; the new moon phase.
The Moon’s Phases
We can break the moon phases into 8 specific phases such as waxing crescent. For keeping it simple, I’m going to cover the moon’s journey in 4 broad categories:
new moon
waxing moon
full moon
waning moon
What is the New Moon Phase
The new moon is a time of the moon’s cycle where the moon goes dark from the sky. The moon isn’t illuminated by the sun, so the moon has disappeared from the sky.
As the name suggests, the new moon is the first of the moon’s phases, marking the start of a new lunar cycle. We experience approximately 12 new moons each year. The new moon marks the new beginning of a ~29 day cycle.
To match your energy with the phase of the moon, is to align with the moon. Align with the new moon phase for renewal. The new moon is an opportunity to listen to your inner wisdom and set your vision.
The New Moon in History
For many years of human history, the moon marked the passage of time. We didn’t have the modern calendar so the lunar cycle was our “month”. The new moon was when a new month began.
The Hebrew calendar was lunar-based and used the moon to guide us.
In biblical times, trumpets were blasted and families got together to celebrate a new moon. It was considered a holy time.
Now we use a modern calendar, we are disconnected from the moon guiding our passage of time. As women in our modern lives we can still observe the moon’s phases and align our energy to the moon’s phases for a nourishing rhythm.
The New Moon Phase Symbolism
At the exact moment of the new moon, the moon is at its darkest for the entire lunar cycle. What happens in darkness in life? Seeds germinate in the dark soil. New life beings in the dark womb of a mother.
In the darkness ais where life begins and grows. I like to consider gardening when thinking of the moon. When you want to grow flowers from seed, you sow the seeds in the dark ground. Similar to the new moon, it is dark in the sky but you are beginning with inner growth taking place.
The new moon is for renewal. A time to set your vision.
The new moon phase is an opportunity for us to grow something new. The new moon is the time to symbolically plant the seeds that create our future.
Nourish Your Soul with the New Moon
I love to encourage women to nourish the feminine part of their soul. As women, we can get so caught up in daily striving with our modern lives, that we forget to nourish the softer parts of our soul that desire softness. To ebb and flow like the phases of the moon is a lovely rhythm for nourishment.
For many years of a woman’s life, she has a menstrual cycle that operates like the moon.
Now you know the moon will be dark in the sky. Take the new moon as an opportunity for you to make plans for what you want to grow and bloom over this lunar cycle.
Retreat
When the moon retreats from our sky, you can do the same. Take time out for yourself and sit in darkness. This may be a bath with only candlelight or simply a darker evening and your journal.
Retreating is harder for some depending on your schedule or age of children, but even 10 minutes is a great practice. Connect to your inner wisdom, listen to the wants of your inner feminine.
Set Your Vision
After taking time to retreat, set your vision in place for the upcoming lunar cycle. This includes how you want to emerge, gently expand and then bloom over the lunar cycle.
Your vision for yourself may be a new way of being. A new way of thinking.
Are you slowing down enough? Do you have a nourishing morning and evening rhythm? Are you continuing on the same path? Is it time for something new? Are you living life with a full heart?
You may wish to write down your vision so it is clear.
Plant the Seeds for Renewal
Ever so gently plant the seeds to go toward your vision. This can include making bookings, scheduling things. Reading how-to guides or videos if you want to learn something new.
This isn’t so much about taking the action, but listening to where you are called. What this dark phase has sparked inside you to renew.
