The Art of Homemaking in Autumn: My Seasonal Journal

Autumn has truly settled in where I live. Some of the trees have turned their beautiful shades of orange and red. I spend quiet time noticing the changes in the natural world around me and it has me falling in love with this season.
Where I live in NSW, the temperature has certainly dropped off overnight, but now the days are catching and cooling, too. The layers or clothing are starting, and it’s time to begin nesting for the slow cooler months to come. Autumn is a season for finding comfort, contentment and warmth in your home.
During autumn we naturally are drawn to making home our focus for the season and preparing for winter when we are resting the most. Homemaking in autumn is about allowing your home to be a soft landing place you and your family need as the natural world outside winds down.
Autumn is truly beautiful!
The desire for nesting this season has me focused on the art of homemaking. I could even say the lost art of homemaking because it is not something society places much value on. It’s often invisible work. Work outside of the home is the prized jewel.
The art of homemaking in autumn is about cultivating hygge for you and your family. Bring a feeling of cosiness, warmth and contentment inside your home. In autumn, the home becomes a sanctuary.
Making Home a Sanctuary
In my home, we are getting out a snug blanket so each place you sit has a way to get cosy. I’ve got candles out by the bath so evenings are very relaxing with a candlelit bath. I’m adding bath salts to mine for the ultimate relax.
Each afternoon I enjoy a mug of tea while my children play, before starting dinner.
Our lighting is soft, with only lamps fitted with gentle amber bulbs that block blue light.
Autumn Homemaking in the Kitchen
Preparing food is a big part of homemaking. Autumn food is nourishing and comforting. In my autumn homemaking, I use the slow cooker multiple times a week. There is something so satisfying about reaching the end of the day and dinner has been slowly cooking and there isn’t much left to do but serve and eat.
Fewer salads at this time of year, but with warm chicken and cranberries this one is cosy!
Around my home with my children we are enjoying seasonal recipes. Here are some of the things we have been creating in the kitchen this autumn that the whole family love:
Crusty bread from scratch. Check out my easy bread recipe! Baking bread is a regular joy in my home. But come autumn, we want more bread for dipping in the increased comfort meals like soups and stews.
Sourdough bread.
White bean casserole with basil from the garden.
Slow cooked beef brisket with slaw on homemade buns.
Butternut soup with parsley from the garden.
Cosy homemade hot apple cider.
Roast chicken, potatoes and carrots in butter.
Granola from scratch. Stay tuned, I will share my recipe.
Kale, cranberry and goat cheese salad with chicken.
Autumn in the Garden
We eat what is in season in my home and a great gauge of this is growing your own produce so you can see what is thriving! For example, I use a lot of sweet cherry tomatoes in summer, but they have finished their season where I live so I will not buy them imported. We just need to wait until they grow again.
What has been thriving in my garden this autumn:
🌿 Basil
🌿 Coriander which has finally stopped bolting as it was at the end of summer where it was so hot.
🌿 Silverbeet
🌿 Celery
🌿 Baby spinach
🍓 Strawberries
Autumn Homemaking Creating
Autumn is the time of my daughter's birthday. This year I am sewing her a new long-sleeve dress. My daughter picked the fabric she liked. If I have leftover fabric, I will sew a pair of pants for my son so they have matching clothes. Too sweet!
I love working with my hands.
I am making plans for sewing a new tablecloth, placemats and decorative fabric covers for my sourdough starter. I adore a cottagecore aesthetic so I’m keeping any fabrics. Here is the wonderful digital sewing machine I use, great for all abilities!
This autumn, my husband made our kids a kitchen helper. I love that he embraces slow hobbies. Yes, we can buy some of these things.
But there is much joy in the process of creating. We were created to create!
It’s a wonderful thing at night to settle in with creating something, instead of scrolling. Especially in the beautiful autumn where you can light a candle and wear cosy socks while you work with your hands. Read my post for my slow living evening routine and habits.
